Frequently asked questions
Do you charge for an estimate / to come measure?
Estimates are completely free — the carpenter comes out, measures, and gives you the exact price before any work is done.
How much for crown molding / trim?
It depends on how much trim, the style, and the material, so the carpenter measures on site and gives you the exact price up front — and the estimate is free.
How soon can you come / schedule?
We schedule free measures quickly, and we'll talk timeline for the work once the carpenter has seen the space — I'll find a time that works for you.
Do you install crown molding?
Yes, crown molding is one of our most popular jobs — the carpenter can go over styles and give you a free estimate.
Do you do baseboards, especially after new flooring?
Absolutely — we install baseboards, including after new flooring goes in, and we'll match your existing trim if you'd like.
Can you build custom built-ins / bookcases?
Yes — custom built-ins are a specialty. Tell the carpenter the spot and what you're picturing, and he'll give you ideas and a price.
Do you do wainscoting / accent walls / paneling?
We do — wainscoting, paneling, and accent walls are great ways to add character, and the carpenter can show you options and give you a free estimate.
Do you hang interior doors?
Yes, we hang interior doors and case them out so they swing and latch right — the carpenter will give you the exact price up front.
Do you do stair railings / trim?
We do stair trim and railings — and if a railing is loose, please use care on the stairs until we make it solid again.
Can you match my existing trim / older home?
Matching existing trim is a real skill and something we do — the carpenter will look at your profile and get as close a match as possible.
Can you repair damaged trim?
Yes — from a small repair to replacing a run of trim, the carpenter will fix it and blend it in, with the price up front.
Do you paint or stain the trim too?
We focus on the carpentry and can prime the work — the carpenter will let you know whether painting or staining to finish is included or a separate step.
Do you do commercial / offices?
Yes, we do commercial trim and millwork as well as homes — just tell me a little about the space and we'll set up a measure.
Do you service my area?
We're local and cover your area — I'll just grab your address and set up a free measure.
⚠️ Safety first
- Loose or wobbly stair railing: Please use extra care on those stairs until it's fixed, and keep a hand on the wall side if you can — a loose railing can give way. We'll get a carpenter out to make it solid again.
- Tall built-in or heavy shelving not secured, with kids in the home: Until it's anchored, please keep kids from climbing or pulling on it — tall shelving can tip. Our carpenter will secure it properly to the wall so it's safe.
- Old trim being removed in a pre-1978 home (possible old paint dust): In an older home, disturbing old paint can create dust worth being careful with — our carpenter uses dust-safe practices, and it's best to keep kids and pets out of the work area while we're at it.
Know the terms
- Crown molding
- The decorative trim where the wall meets the ceiling.
- Casing
- The flat or profiled trim that frames a door or window opening.
- Coping
- Cutting one piece of trim to fit the shape of another at an inside corner, so the joint stays tight.
- Wainscoting
- Decorative paneling or beadboard on the lower part of a wall.
- Reveal
- The small, consistent setback where casing meets a door or window jamb; even reveals are a sign of good work.
- Paint-grade vs stain-grade
- Trim built to be painted (like MDF) versus real hardwood meant to show its grain when stained.
