⚠️ Safety first
- A railing or guard is loose, wobbly, or failing: Please don't lean on or trust that railing, and keep everyone away from that edge until it's fixed — a loose railing is exactly where a fall happens. We'll get a technician out to make it solid and safe.
- A deck or balcony railing feels unsafe with height behind it: Please keep people off that deck or balcony, or at least well back from the railing, until our technician secures it — a failing railing up high is a serious risk. We'll prioritize getting out to you.
- Balusters or pickets missing with a child or pet present: Please block off that section however you can and keep children and pets away from the gap for now — it's a fall risk. We'll get a technician out to close it in to code.
- Someone has already fallen and is hurt: Please take care of them first — if anyone is hurt, call 911 right away. Once everyone's okay, we'll get the railing fixed so it's safe again.
Know the terms
- Guard / guardrail
- The railing on an open side (deck, balcony, landing) whose job is to stop a fall.
- Handrail
- The graspable rail you hold on stairs or ramps; height and shape are set by code.
- Baluster / picket
- The vertical infill bars between the posts and rail.
- Newel / post
- The sturdy anchor post that carries the railing's load; most failures start here.
- Cable railing
- Horizontal stainless cables as infill for open views; needs correct tension.
- Sphere / spacing rule
- The code that limits gap size (about four inches) so a small child can't pass through.
